Wanchese Fish Company: Day at the Dock

The Hatteras Fisherman project has evolved over the years to encompass the entire journey of the seafood that lands itself on our plates. It’s an interwoven path of land and sea and involves an entire community of people. The deeper I get into this world of local commercial fishing, the greater my depth of respect, awe, and appreciation becomes for the culture, integrity, and sacrifice of the men and women who make this their world. It is increasingly important to me to document the lives, process, and culture of local commercial fishing. I want people who don’t have the opportunity to see face to face the care, dedication, hardwork, and community behind the seafood that ends up at the dinner table- to see it through the images I am allowed to make. I want Buy Local to take on profound meaning to those who see these photographs.

I had the privilege of documenting a day at Wanchese Fish Company as boats came into dock with their catch. As the seafood was unloaded it was a fine tuned orchestra of organization: from the boat to the bin folks hauled, shucked, packed, and cleaned pound after pound of seafood. I hope these photographs give you an insider’s view into the many hands and livelihoods that are represented by the Fresh NC seafood we all love.
