Rolleiflex: Medium Format Film

April 21, 2015
Kate Pullen

I recently purchased a Rolleiflex TLR from Hotline Thrift Shop in Buxton.

Twin Lens Reflex Rolleiflex cameras are made in Germany and are built extremely well.

I started shooting with film, and my early jobs were all shot with film, but 35 mm. I have always wanted a medium format film camera to mess around with, so I was extremely excited to get my hands on one.

I ordered some 120 Ilford 400 iso film for it a few weeks ago.

I had to watch youtube videos on how to load the film. (I am not ashamed to say I had no clue what I was doing.)

Digital is so different from film.  Digital you can just fire away until you get it right with instant feedback.  Film you have to get it right the first time.  (a light meter will help with that)

With film you really have to slow down and think about what you are shooting, you have to be intentional.

Anyway, I got my first roll of film back yesterday afternoon.

I am so psyched and bummed at the same time.

I am psyched that the camera works and bummed that I have so much to learn about film.

I guess that is one of the things about photography and life.  There is something new you can learn everyday.

Can’t wait to shoot more film in the future.
