“In a society that focuses so much about being fit for appearance sake, it is overwhelmingly encouraging to find people like Kristian Head, who are dedicated to teaching, promoting, and encouraging others to move beyond the superficial and see fitness as a gateway to a healthy lifestyle and a stronger self- rather than just a number on a scale.”

I’ve had several projects going this winter for portfolio review for PPA… many centered around lighting. I had a vision in my mind of what I wanted for this particular shoot and right from the start it meant working with Kristian Head. She is the epitome of physical and mental strength and resolve. Her story is pretty remarkable, and her pursuit of overcoming a challenge inspires me.

A few years ago, while working as an EMT, Kristian was injured with two complete fractures to her L5 vertebra that were floating around her spinal cord. This should have left her paralyzed, but after 5 months of diagnostic tests (with the above diagnosis still unknown at the time) she was advised incorrectly that the problem was muscular. She was told that she should workout to strengthen her muscles. In the end, this caused her to end up with a 3 level spinal fusion. On May 1, 2014 she had surgery, and for several months she was confined to staying immobile (literally laying horizontal) as her body healed. With 6 titanium screws and 2 titanium rods in her back, she was released from doctor’s care in mid August 2014.

After going through such an incredible ordeal and a very long road of recovery ahead of her, it would be easy for Kristian to get discouraged.  But while she was recovering from surgery, she began to channel her energy into healing and rediscovering the strength that had been taken from her. What began as a personal pursuit for wellness, has become a persistent passion to motivate, encourage, and empower others to find what drives them to be the best them that they can be.

She has worked tirelessly for months getting ready to open The Fort, a fitness gym on Hatteras Island. And yes- I will be there… I need all the help I can get.
