In 2013 I was selected by Workshops with Purpose to be among an innagural team of media professionals to work in Kijabe, Kenya. This team, led by world renowned photographer Kevin Kubota, Benjamin Edwards, and Andrew & Marianne Nicoderm, would use our photography and videography gifts to create a professional media outlet for the hospital: documenting the story of the hospital, its staff and patients.

This was a life changing experience for me. Words cannot describe the raw reliance upon faith and hope that I witnessed when doctors didn’t have proper equipment to operate on patients and were at the mercy of God’s grace to intervene. Kenyans from miles away would travel miles to be treated at “God’s hospital,” where regardless of financial situation, ethnicity, or religion, every patient was treated.

We heard about and witnessed miracles before our eyes. This increased our passion to document this story. Below are some of my photos from the project. Our photos and videos were collected into a central database which was then later used to update the hospital’s website and marketing kit.

In 2014 we were invited to speak at The Wedding & Portrait Photographers International Conference about our experience. I was amazed to see how many professionals really want to go beyond their day-to-day work, and use their gifts to bless others. Workshops with Purpose continues its work, and will be traveling to Bolivia this Spring. Please contact them for more information about their projects and/or how to launch your own.
